Stage 16 – Moirans-en-Montagne to Bern (Switzerland)

Today, the Tour dips into its 3rd country other than France, on a 209km flat transfer stage into Switzerland. For the riders, it was an easier stage, in advance of the assault on the Emosson dam scheduled for day after tomorrow’s rest day.

For me, a rougher day than I’d have preferred. Some mis-directions and lost time, angles that didn’t quite work out, and a broken race radio shredded the idea that maybe I, too, would have an easy day on the road. Today was a bust for sure, but for the completion’s sake, here’s what I got from today.

 News from the start line:

Cannondale-Drapac use wacky derailleur pulleys. However, according to Cannondale, their drivetrain tweaks and hacks (Massive 17t CeramicSpeed pulleys/bearings, with a freshly waxed chain) saves 7 watts over standard kit. Not bad.

The Gendarmerie (France’s national police) are the major players in securing the course. Local PDs help, but by and large, it’s the Gendarmes manning course entry/exits, directing traffic, and tacking jerks running too close to the riders. This year, a total of 23,000 Gendarmes will be involved at some point during the Tour.

Elsewhere, I perched myself behind a haybale covering some road furniture:

Finally, from the short, cobbled, corkscrew climbe ~3k from the finish.

Cobbles and Quickstep: two great tastes that taste great together. Basically. You probably shouldn't try to eat either, but you get what I'm sayin'.
